19 Years With Mary Kay

by | Feb 8, 2013 | Mary Kay, me, thankfulness

I don’t talk much about my Mary Kay business these days. I guess I really don’t know why.

God continues to bless my business. I really can’t take any credit for it’s success.

Coming up on February 21 I will be celebrating my 19th anniversary with Mary Kay. I was pregnant with Ali when I began my business. She was to be born in May that year, and I so desperately wanted to stay home and raise our children. I was still working full-time as an Administrative Assistant at a local manufacturing company. It was a good job, but I remember one day driving to work through the “S curve” of downtown, praying for God to show me what I was to do with my life and how I could stay home with our children. I remember saying out loud, “There’s got to be more to life than this.”

Within a short time I met my soon-to-be-lifelong-friend, Jeanie. She introduced me to Mary Kay, the products and the company. (We’ve been friends ever since and God has called us both to continue our businesses and directorships, but to serve Him together in other capacities too–through BSF and through Mission of Hope.) I worked my business diligently alongside of my job for the last three months of my pregnancy. After taking a 12-week maternity leave after giving birth to Ali, I decided not to return to my job as I had built my business enough to replace my full-time income.

Three years later after Zach was born, I became a Director and was given the opportunity to lead others in their journey in Mary Kay. God has held that position for me for almost 16 years.

I was given so many gifts through Mary Kay. I loved working from home as we raised Ali and Zach. I was able to be the mom I always dreamed of being. I believe that’s one reason why I have the relationships I have with them today. I’m so thankful. I know without a doubt God placed this opportunity in my life to bless me and our family, and to grow me and my skills. Sure, the income has been nice, along with the cars and prizes. But the personal growth I’ve experienced, the leadership and relationship building skills I’ve learned, the customer service skills I’ve learned, and the business management opportunities I’ve experienced have been the most incredible parts of my journey in this business.

And even though I let the cars, rings, suits, etc. dictate who I was for a time in my life, God has centered me once again on Him and not His blessings. I am so, so thankful for that too. Maybe that’s why I don’t talk much about my business. He has once again become my priority…not His blessings.

What I’ve learned and experienced through my Mary Kay business has equipped me to do what I’m doing today at Mission of Hope. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without it.

And I stand back in awe of how God continues to bless my business. Sure, I spent much time building my business early on, and that has paid off all these years. But since God has called me to serve Him at Mission of Hope, I don’t have the time anymore to build my business like I used to. So the only way it’s grown is from Him blessing it.

I met with a new customer on Monday. She was referred to me by a friend. I received a thank you note in the mail from her yesterday. She wrote, “I put on my makeup yesterday and it felt like a million dollars! A half-hour with you and I feel like a new woman. Thank you so very much.” Yes, God even uses makeup as a means to bless others. And He blessed me through her and her note.

Even though my focus has changed and my Mary Kay business isn’t my first priority in my life right now, it’s still important to me. My customers and the women in our unit are so special to me. They are some of the most beautiful women I’ve ever had the privilege to get to know…and some have journeyed with me for all of my 19 years in my business! I’ve met so many wonderful people and friends for a lifetime, including Jeanie and Carolyn (pictured with me above in 2008)! I still love helping women to be their best…on the inside and out. And I absolutely love our products and what they’ve done for my skin.

I never dreamed 19 years ago I’d be where I’m at in my life today. It’s better than anything I ever imagined. I’m thankful that Mary Kay has been a big part of this journey of my life! 🙂
