Wisdom From an Almost-18 Year Old

by | Apr 20, 2012 | This Lefe Family

After work today, I met Ali at the bridal store…we picked up her prom dress. It’s beautiful. She makes it even more beautiful. I’ll post pictures the night of prom next weekend. 🙂

After arriving home, I ran Zach over to school for soccer practice…or I guess they were running three miles…instead of practice. I had determined on the way home that I was going to skip working out tonight…I was just too drained.

Walking in the door, I shared with Bill and Ali about my day. As I finished, I also added that I wasn’t going to work out tonight. I was giving my body a rest. (I have been doing my workouts in the mornings early, but this week I haven’t been able to do that due to early morning commitments.) Ali piped up and said, “If you work out, you’ll relieve your stress.” She had just finished her workout.

Such wisdom from an almost-18 year old. I knew she was right. I knew she knew what she was talking about. That’s what she does to relieve stress. And it works. She helped me change my focus with that short statement.

Before thinking another thought, I walked back to our bedroom, changed into my workout clothes, grabbed my water bottle and headed downstairs to do my workout. Thank you, Ali.

I didn’t do a mediocre workout…I tried kicking it up a notch with lunges, holding an 8 pound weight in each hand. I recalled the days I used to do them with a 25 pound weight in each hand. I figured 8 pounds would be a piece of cake. After all, I’ve been faithfully working out and getting in shape since January. Right? WRONG! After three sets, my legs hurt so bad…I couldn’t finish my goal of five sets. I’m now not sure I’ll be able to get out of bed in the morning, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to walk tomorrow! Oh my goodness! So much for “being in shape!”

I find it funny…I went from having the mindset of not working out tonight, then going to the mindset of kicking it up a notch. All because of Ali’s words. Maybe I need to listen to her wisdom a little more often, only not to take it too far and kill my legs with lunges!

So if you see me tomorrow or Saturday, don’t laugh at me if I’m walking a little funny…I’ll be recovering from some very sore muscles! 🙂
