Sleeping With the Windows Open

by | Jul 7, 2009 | just for fun, me

To me, there’s nothing like sleeping with the windows open at night during the summer months! Lately it’s been cool enough to do so, and as I crawled into bed last night, feeling a cool breeze brush over me, I thought, “It doesn’t get any better than this!”

Growing up, we didn’t have air conditioning in our home. I remember many a night, suffering and sweating as I tried desperately to fall asleep in the hot, humid weather. I used to put a box fan in my window which would blow directly on me. I would wear as little clothing as I could possibly get away with to bed, and yet still be covered–I had three brothers in the house! Between being extremely warm, and the sound of freight trains and their whistles screaming into my bedroom windows, there were many nights that I can remember not getting a restful sleep. But it was summer, and I was a teenager then…who cared? I could always sneak in a nap during the day, or sleep in through the better part of the next morning. 🙂

I’m glad those pre-air conditioning days are over, however! Once the humidity rises and it gets too uncomfortable, I’ll be the first one to flip on the switch for our air conditioning! But on nights like last night, I would much rather enjoy the cool breeze coming in through the windows, the sounds of quiet (except for those same freight trains and their whistles, only in the distance now), and the bright almost-full moon in the sky!

Needless to say, I fell asleep feeling very peaceful and relaxed, and it felt great to wake up this morning, snuggled under the covers with the cool morning air! It doesn’t get any better than this! 🙂
