My "Rocketman"

by | Mar 11, 2009 | Bill, family

My husband, Bill, has many nicknames. When he was growing up, I understand he was called Billy. Maybe that’s why some of my family calls him “Billy L.” I’ve also heard him called “W.D.” from my side of the family…referring probably to his initials. One of his friends from Phoenix calls him “Billy Left-with-a beer.” Jill used to call him “The Husband” because Bill once referred to me as “The Wife” at a soccer game. (That did not sit well with neither Jill nor me.) 🙂 I’m sure there are many more nicknames for him that I either don’t know or can’t remember.

The one that sticks in my mind is the one my brother Steve came up with for Bill. He calls him “Rocketman.” When he first called him that, I for the life of me, couldn’t figure out what in the world that was supposed to mean! Steve explained that when it comes to the time that Bill passes away, he’s going to rocket straight to heaven for having to put up with me all these years! 🙂 You have to know my brother Steve to appreciate that! 🙂 He cracks me up!

Billy L. IS my “Rocketman.” I know I’m not the easiest to live with…ask my brother Steve…he’ll tell you! 🙂 I want to take a moment to brag about Bill just a little today. He met me for coffee yesterday morning before I went to the Mission. We hadn’t done that in a very long time. It was good to re-group with him since our schedules are so screwy these days.

When we got home after school yesterday, Bill asked me if I checked my email. I hadn’t, and I asked him why. He said something like, “Oh, no reason. Just wondering.” When I got down to my office early evening, I found a package of eight funsize 3 Musketeers Mint candy bars sitting in front of my laptop with “Love You!” written on the package. You should have seen the smile on my face! I don’t normally eat many candy bars, but these are my favorite (next to Candy Cane Hershey’s Kisses at Christmastime)! I will treat myself to one a day for the next eight days!

Bill surprises me like that every now and then with small things that mean the world to me. Last Wednesday, the day of Jill’s funeral, he brought home a Starbuck’s Peppermint Mocha for me to enjoy with my breakfast! We call them a “Cup of Joy.” He knew I could use a little joy to start my day last Wednesday. I held an appointment for work on Saturday. When I arrived home afterwards, there were two bottles of wine on the table, one of each of my favorite Fireside wines.

I talked with Tina last night, and Mike brought her a bouquet of flowers home yesterday. Her girls made her a “Thanks for being Supermom” card. When Mike and I were talking yesterday at the Mission about him taking home flowers to Tina, I was thinking, “I would love to get flowers today.” Little did I know that I had eight funsize 3 Musketeers Mint candy bars waiting for me in my office, from my “Rocketman”! 🙂
