195. From Childhood to Now: Real Talk with Karen and Sheila

by | Apr 29, 2025 | Podcast

Little did I know when I moved from one small Iowa town to another in 5th grade, that God would place incredible people in my life who would impact me and influence my life for good for decades. Two of these people join me on the podcast today in our guest episode of the month. These two friends, Karen Wacker and Sheila Schulte, were two of the first I met as the new kid in 5th grade–and we’re still friends today! We’ve all gone our separate ways, doing varied things in life, yet we’ve never lost touch with each other. We don’t see each other often, but when we do, we pick back up right where we left off the last time. Decades of their friendship have blessed my life so, and I’m immensely grateful for such gifts as Karen and Sheila. They’ve played a part in me being the person I am today, with many memories, laughter, and lots of fun.

From Childhood to Now: Real Talk with Karen and Sheila

I knew we wouldn’t have a lull in conversation, as we never do. We discuss much in this episode. Everything from our childhood (wait until to see what Sheila surprises Karen and I with!) and what our lives consist of now. We share tears of both laughter and challenges, and we cling to and offer hope and encouragement. We get real as we always do with each other, and it’s a gift to share this conversation with you.

I believe you’ll think Karen and Sheila are as amazing as I do!

Click on the player above to listen to the full 41-minute episode. It’s a bit longer than my other guest episodes, but I’m not surprised!

As we close out our Spring Cleaning for the Soul series, I invite you back next week! Our new timely and fresh series here on the podcast for May is Bloom Where You Are Planted. We’re looking at what happens before blooming, while blooming, and after blooming in life. I pray it blesses you all month long. The newest episode will drop next Tuesday.

Stay encouraged today and God bless you!

Your worth isn’t measured by how much you get done today.

Healthy rhythms leave space for the things that truly matter—rest, prayer, relationships, joy.

So here’s your permission slip: You don’t have to do it all. You just have to do what God’s calling you to today. 💛

What’s one life-giving thing you’re putting on your calendar this week?

Somewhere along the way, we started thinking ‘abundant life’ meant more—more activities, more hustle, more saying yes when we’re already tired.

But Jesus’ version of abundant life? It looks a lot more like a garden than a calendar. It’s tending what matters, pulling the weeds, and letting the right fruit grow in the right season.

And sometimes that fruit is an actual tomato. 🍅

So maybe abundant life isn’t about adding more to your plate… maybe it’s about savoring what’s already there. 🌱✨

Sometimes, the holiest thing you can do is pause. Maybe even take a nap.

Rest is a gift from God, not a luxury you have to earn. Breathe, slow down, and let Him refill you.
It’s not about chasing a number on a scale.

It’s about moving because I can, breathing in His creation, and letting my heart remember who made it all. 🌾☀️

No matter what comes our way today, we can trust God is with us in it all.

Have an abundant day!

33 years today! ❤️

We were just kids in 1992, full of hopes, dreams, and the desire to grow old together.

Here we still are, trusting God and thanking Him for the love, the years, the adventures, the gift of family, and the life we get to live... together.

I love you, Billy L!

Picking flowers counts as exercise, right? 😉

But it’s also a reminder—caring for our bodies and our souls often happens in the small, intentional moments.

Move a little. Breathe deep. Thank Him for the beauty around you. 🌼

Your body isn’t your enemy—it’s the vessel God gave you to live out the life He planned. Treat it with care. Rest is part of wellness too. 🌿
