First Day of School

by | Aug 25, 2008 | This Lefe Family

Our children started back to school on Wednesday. It was a big day for both of them…our daughter started High School and our son started Middle School. Despite a few minor inconveniences, their first three days of school went very well…thankfully!

I consider it a privilege to be able to drive our children to and from school each day. We have about a 20 minute commute each way. On Wednesday morning, I dropped off Ali at the High School building first, then circled around and dropped off Zach at the Middle School. I wasn’t prepared for what happened next. As I turned around and waved goodbye to Zach after he exited the car, it dawned on me that I had just dropped him off at the Middle School…no longer the elementary school…but the MIDDLE SCHOOL! My babies are in HIGH SCHOOL and in MIDDLE SCHOOL!! How can that be? Wasn’t it just a couple years ago I was trying to work around their Fisher Price and Little Tikes toys in my office? Wasn’t it just awhile ago that we were attending Kindergarten Round-up? Didn’t I just experience these feelings of an “empty nest” just a few years ago on the first day they both were in school, for the first time?

I just didn’t expect these feelings. Tears flooded my eyes, and began running down my face. I remembered praying something like, “Ok, God. I know my children are yours. Please take care of them today and since your hands are the best to be in, I put them into your hands. Be with them and guide them through their day today.” And then I asked for strength for me, and then I called a friend who would listen and understand.

I was reminded, again, that God wants us to go to Him with everything. Our concerns, our fears, our hopes, our dreams. Our hurts, our pains, our joys, our struggles. Even when our kids start back to school, and we struggle with that…He’s not too busy! He’s always ready and waiting for us to come to Him! It must please Him so when we do. I know how I enjoy it when my children come to me! Isn’t it great to be reminded we don’t have to go through life on our own? We have someone who is with us 24/7! God is waiting for us to come to Him…regarding everything, no matter how big or small it may seem!

As this school year progresses, and as our children get older, I’m glad I can take everything to God…as I know I will need His guidance, His wisdom, His love and His reassurrance! It’s a big world we send our children into each day…it does my heart good knowing I can put them in His care each and every day. And you can do the same!
