We had a great Independence Day Weekend!
Our family and my brother Pat’s family traveled about six hours south to see my grandmother, Edna, and my aunt and uncle, Wendy and Dirk. Grandma Edna celebrated her 90th birthday on May 30. She suffered a stroke just a few weeks ago which has affected her left side and her speech. Dirk is battling cancer in his sinuses, and is in a waiting period for about six weeks after completing radiation. The kids and I visited them in March, and we thought it was a good time to go see them again this weekend since we all had some time off of work. I AM SO GLAD WE DID!
We had a terrific time…full of funny texts on the way to and from, lots of laughs, great memories were made, we had time to relax, and most importantly, we spent some wonderful time with Grandma Edna, Dirk and Wendy! It was a weekend we won’t soon forget!
My family relationships have become a top priority to me, especially after losing Mom and Dad. Grandma Edna is the only grandparent I have left, and it meant the world to me to see her and spend time with her this weekend. Learning that she had a stroke a few weeks ago really scared me. I realize how life-threating a stroke can be…Mom had one and it took her a long time to recover.
Grandma Edna talked a lot about Mom yesterday when we spent time with her. They used to talk everyday. It broke my heart when Grandma Edna said, “I didn’t even get to say goodbye to your mom.” She also said, “I don’t understand why she had to leave us so young.” We all agreed with her. She was fighting back the tears. I realized, to Grandma Edna, I’m the closest thing to Mom, and I’m glad I am! I want to have those conversations with her…I just wish I could have more of them!
We all had a great time! The kids had fun together and the adults did too! It was a great weekend to get away! Some pictures below show how much fun we had! 🙂
