205. Summer of Abundance Week 4: Surrender Is Where Freedom Starts

by | Jul 8, 2025 | Podcast

Welcome to Encouragement for Real Life and to week 4 of the Summer of Abundance series where we are journeying together for 12 weeks to a full life. So far we’ve covered three important elements of abundant living: 1) Identity in Christ, 2) Renewed Mindset, 3) Intimacy with God. Today’s focus has to do with the posture of our hearts when it comes to our walk with Jesus, and I invite you to embrace a fresh perspective on this element of abundant life: Spiritual Surrender. I know, surrender may not sound like a very exciting subject, and it can challenge us a bit, can’t it? But this can greatly impact our spiritual lives–all for good. Surrender isn’t a restrictive, confining concept, it’s actually a gift. It’s a freeing way of life–one that God invites us into. Surrender is where freedom starts.

Summer of Abundance Week 4: Surrender Is Where Freedom Starts

Is it just me, or do we women struggle with surrender? Maybe it is just me. My parents raised me to be a strong, independent woman, and I share this in great detail in Chapter 6 of my book, Right Now Matters. I have to say, this independence has paid off well for me most of my life. Except for when I think I’m right. Or when I feel I need to be in control. Ask my husband, he’ll tell you I have difficulty in letting go of my strong-willed tendencies. Or ask God and He’ll verify that surrender is never my first choice.

The truth I continue to process is that surrender isn’t a one time thing.

This surrender thing is more than just a one and done activity. It’s an initial surrender and a daily, sometimes moment-to-moment surrender.

Abundant life isn’t found in holding on tightly—but in letting go. Not in managing all the varying outcomes in life, but in trusting the One who sees the whole picture.

We look at Scripture for hope and discuss three surrender shifts.

When we surrender, we’re not giving up–we’re giving it over.

Surrender is where freedom starts.

Next week, we are discussing the element of Purposeful Presence–and I can’t wait to dive in with you.

God bless you!

Your worth isn’t measured by how much you get done today.

Healthy rhythms leave space for the things that truly matter—rest, prayer, relationships, joy.

So here’s your permission slip: You don’t have to do it all. You just have to do what God’s calling you to today. 💛

What’s one life-giving thing you’re putting on your calendar this week?

Somewhere along the way, we started thinking ‘abundant life’ meant more—more activities, more hustle, more saying yes when we’re already tired.

But Jesus’ version of abundant life? It looks a lot more like a garden than a calendar. It’s tending what matters, pulling the weeds, and letting the right fruit grow in the right season.

And sometimes that fruit is an actual tomato. 🍅

So maybe abundant life isn’t about adding more to your plate… maybe it’s about savoring what’s already there. 🌱✨

Sometimes, the holiest thing you can do is pause. Maybe even take a nap.

Rest is a gift from God, not a luxury you have to earn. Breathe, slow down, and let Him refill you.
It’s not about chasing a number on a scale.

It’s about moving because I can, breathing in His creation, and letting my heart remember who made it all. 🌾☀️

What’s your favorite way to move your body in a way that feels like worship?

No matter what comes our way today, we can trust God is with us in it all.

Have an abundant day!

33 years today! ❤️

We were just kids in 1992, full of hopes, dreams, and the desire to grow old together.

Here we still are, trusting God and thanking Him for the love, the years, the adventures, the gift of family, and the life we get to live... together.

I love you, Billy L!

Picking flowers counts as exercise, right? 😉

But it’s also a reminder—caring for our bodies and our souls often happens in the small, intentional moments.

Move a little. Breathe deep. Thank Him for the beauty around you. 🌼

Your body isn’t your enemy—it’s the vessel God gave you to live out the life He planned. Treat it with care. Rest is part of wellness too. 🌿
