Prayer for Discomfort, Anger, Tears & Foolishness

Pastor Lynn Cunningham ended his sermon at Mission of Hope tonight with a prayer that made me pause. As he began to close his message, he said he’d like to pray for four things for us tonight…”that God would bless you with discomfort, with anger, with tears, and with foolishness.”

My first thought was “Huh?” I’m sure the look on my face said the same.

He went on to explain as he read the following prayer which penetrated my thoughts and my heart…

“May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy.

May God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done. Amen.”

As he read the third blessing about tears, I couldn’t help but think of my friends at the Mission. Tears filled my eyes, and I thanked God for giving me the opportunity to love these dear ones.

May God truly bless each one of us with discomfort, anger, tears, and especially foolishness!

Good night!
