Life and Death

by | Aug 17, 2009 | family, friends, grieving, Steve

When I woke up this morning, I had no idea what God had planned for our lives today.

It has been a day of joy mixed with sorrow. A day of life and death.

On the way to church, I found out that Pastor Barb had been called to the nursing home to be with Steve’s family as he was in his final hours here on this earth. Tears of sadness followed…

Keeping Steve in my prayers, yet trying to stay focused on helping lead worship at Mission of Hope this morning, brought me great comfort. I was reminded what’s really important in life…

After church I got a beautiful text with some wonderful news! My friend Karen and her husband Tom became the proud parents of Olivia Marie this morning. She weighed 8 lbs. 7 oz. and was 21 inches long. I still consider newborn babies little miracles! What joy Karen and Tom must be experiencing this evening…

Tina, Mike and the girls were coming over for a mid-afternoon meal, and as Bill went out to start up the grill, Momma Kitty (the mom of the baby kittens born this spring) was on the cement slab in back and did not look right. She must have gotten hit by a car sometime this morning. No broken skin, but there’s certainly something wrong with her back. My heart sank. Zach cried, and Ali tried to help her. It has not been a good afternoon here since then. She doesn’t want us to be around her. She is able to move, but not very well and has moved herself out of our sight. I’m thinking she will be dying this evening…

Pastor Barb called this evening to let us know Steve passed away sometime around 5:00. I know he’s with Jesus and I can only imagine what he’s experiencing right now in our Lord’s presence! I’m sad though for the loss that we who are left here, especially his family, are experiencing now and will experience as we grieve Steve’s death. He was a very special man, who lived out his faith until the very end. I’m glad Bill, the kids and I got to be a part of his life to witness it…

A day of life and death…little Olivia coming into this world, Steve leaving it for his eternal home, and I hope we can save Momma Kitty. Joy and much sadness in our home tonight. One of Steve’s favorite Bible verses was Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” That will be my prayer.
