Wristband Or Not, You Are A V.I.P.

by | Aug 13, 2014 | Encouragement, Love Others

“This area is only for V.I.P.s. You don’t have a wristband. You don’t belong here.”

The words from the 20ish-year-old cut deep. He had the tact of a grisly bear.

“You don’t belong here.”

Yep, another reminder:  I’m not good enough.

Will I ever be??

This young man didn’t know me, bless his heart. Scratch that. He knew one thing about me. He knew I didn’t have the special V.I.P. wristband.

He didn’t know his words pierced my heart. He didn’t know what I had been dealing with that very day… feelings of rejection, disappointment, not fitting in anywhere with anyone, uncertainty of the journey I was on, wondering if I was making any sort of difference in this life.

He had no idea.

“You don’t belong here.”

I pray no one has ever said or implied those very words to you.

Even so, have you ever felt that way? Feeling like you’ll never be a V.I.P? Struggling with feelings of being good enough on any given day? Wondering if you’ll ever fit in?

If you have, I believe you’re in good company.

Looking at Psalm 139:13-14, may we let truth sink deep into our souls:

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

And also Jeremiah 1:5:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart,” says the Lord.

Jeremiah 1 5In God’s eyes, you and I are pretty special. After all, He created us. He didn’t miss one detail when forming us. He gave us our gifts, our talents, our eye color and our personalities. Everything.

And even if we’ve been messing up since the day we were born, we’ve not messed up so much that God has turned His back on us. We are His V.I.P.s. No one can take that away from us. No one can take that away from you. You are precious in His sight.

Today we have a choice. We can listen to and believe what others say, we can believe the things we conjure up in our own minds, or we can believe what our Creator says about us.

Friend, you are good enough. You belong. You are a very important person… to God and to the one who is typing these words. You matter.

Please believe these words. They are nothing but complete and total truth. Delight in them today. Go about your day and pass them on.

I shot that 20ish-year old a quick smile that day, after my heart recovered from the blow of his words. If only he could have read my thoughts…

“Oh, how wrong you are, mister. I am a daughter of the King. God’s fingerprints are all over me. I’ll take them over a wristband any day.”

From one V.I.P. to another, be blessed today!

Julie

    Thank you for the reminder of Psalm 139. That is my ‘go to’ chapter when feeling left out, during times of despair and in good times. (The good, the bad and the ugly times of life.)

    This is a beautiful reminder today, Julie, that we are ALL important in God’s eyes. And this is the greatest reminder for me, a perpetual “mess-up”…. “And even if we’ve been messing up since the day we were born, we’ve not messed up so much that God has turned His back on us.” So thankful we serve a God that loves us even still…Thank you for always turning us back to the One who loves us more than we could ever imagine, especially on the days when we feel like no one else does. xoxo, mb

      Thank you, friend! I think we’d have lots of “mess-up” stories to share if we ever got together over coffee. I’d love that opportunity! God is faithful, and I’m so glad His grace covers us. Thank you for hosting the Woman to Woman link up. It’s always a gift to me! Have a blessed day, dear friend!

    A great reminder! Thanks so much for sharing. I have battled those feelings of not belonging so much in my life, but it is so sweet to let it go and fully take peace in the fact that I belong to HIM.

    I think the last few sentences were my favorite, Julie. I love the image that His fingerprints are all over me and they totally trump the wrist band. 😉

    Great reminders to think on today. I am so glad we belong to Him.

    Oh…MY! I am 66 and have felt this way so much of my life. I did not fit in, wasn’t good enough, not thin enough, not this or that! I do know that God made me and calls me “very good”…beautiful in His eyes. I am so grateful to have been reminded today for I had a rough morning with a child and his mother and grandmother. I felt “not good enough” to be tutoring this child. I know better. And I thank you and appreciate your precious words, Julie.
