The Difficult Side of Mother’s Day

by | May 10, 2014 | Encouragement, Personal memories

Tomorrow, Mother’s Day, can be a tough day for many.

Yesterday I shared memories of my motherhood journey. I love being a mom, and I enjoy celebrating Mother’s Day with my family. They usually spoil me and make me feel extra-special.

But in all honesty,

Mother’s Day is a bittersweet day for me.

It has been since the passing of my wonderful mother in December 2006. When Mother’s Day 2007 rolled around, I wasn’t prepared for the emotions I would experience. I spent most of that day in tears.

I’m pausing today to empathize with those for whom Mother’s Day isn’t such a beautiful, splendid day.

The reasons it can be difficult are endless:

–The death, or absence of a mother in one’s life.
–Living in a past or present tough relationship with one’s mom.
–Past or present abandonment or abuse by a mother.
–Moms who don’t have their children with them… from death, the court system, missing child, adoption, abortion, or from something else.
–Mothers who have experienced miscarriage in pregnancy.
–Women who aren’t able to be a mother, but so desperately want to be.

Your reason might be different than these.

Even though I may not know your story, please know today my heart is with you.

My beautiful memories of Mom have replaced much of the heartache of her passing. Even though I know life and Mother’s Day will never be the same without her, the hope I have has carried me.

And since my faith is in Jesus Christ, He is the source of my hope. Because of the sacrifice He made on our behalf, I will again see Mom one day. Jesus has healed my heart to where Mother’s Day is now more filled with smiles than with tears.

I pray this for you as well.

May each of us be sensitive to where others are this weekend. Romans 12:15 reads:

Be happy with those who are happy. Be sad with those who are sad.”

Romans 12 15

I lift each one of us in prayer. I pray for Jesus to meet us right where we are… in our happiness or in our sadness, and I pray He strengthens us and gives us His peace.

May your heart be lightened, your spirit hopeful, and your day blessed because of Him.

Much love to you today,
Julie

Kami, I wish I could have met your mom. She must have been someone really special. I hope your Mother’s Day was still a happy one, even though you miss her. Let’s get together sometime. Blessings to you today!
